GPU as a Service (GPUaaS) is a cloud service that lets you rent access to powerful GPUs instead of buying and operating the hardware yourself.

GPUs are particularly useful for workloads that perform lots of computations in parallel, such as:

• Training and running AI/ML models, including LLMs
• Generative AI and image/video generation
• Scientific simulations
• 3D rendering and graphics
• Data analytics and high-performance computing

For example, instead of purchasing an NVIDIA H100 server—which requires significant upfront investment, power, cooling, and maintenance—you can rent H100 GPUs from a cloud provider for a few hours or months. You typically pay based on GPU type, number of GPUs, and usage time.

Common GPUaaS offerings include:

• AWS EC2 GPU instances — NVIDIA GPU-equipped virtual machines
• Google Cloud GPU instances — GPUs attached to Compute Engine VMs
• Microsoft Azure N-series — GPU virtual machines
• CoreWeave — cloud infrastructure focused heavily on GPU/AI workloads
• Lambda GPU Cloud — on-demand and reserved GPU infrastructure

There are several ways GPUaaS can be delivered. At the simplest level, you rent a VM containing one or more GPUs and manage the software yourself. More specialized services provide GPU clusters, Kubernetes infrastructure, or managed AI platforms where much of the configuration and orchestration is handled for you.

A simple analogy is: buying a GPU server is like buying a car, while GPUaaS is like renting one whenever you need it. The major advantage is avoiding large upfront hardware costs and gaining the ability to scale from a few GPUs to potentially hundreds or thousands. The tradeoffs are recurring cloud costs, data-transfer costs, availability constraints, and less control over the underlying hardware.
